Beetle Boy M G Leonard 9781510033252 Books Reviews
This may be written for the 8 to 12 year old age group, but it will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. When the Director of Science, Dr. Cuttle, from the Museum of Natural History goes missing, his 13 year old son, Darkus, is sent to live with his Uncle, Maximillian Cuttle, and his cousins. They are eccentric characters to be sure, and welcome Darkus into their unusual and cluttered home. Darkus meets a discovers a beetle as he cleans out his new room at the home of his Uncle. This black rhinoceros beetle he names Baxter and becomes friends with will prove instrumental in assisting in solving the mystery of his father's disappearance. There's lots of humor here, the requisite amount of grodiness and ick for youngsters, loads of science and many larger than life characters. Thoroughly entertaining and captivating, I can't wait to read the stories that will follow. Gotta Love Bugs and Science!
13-year-old Darkus Cuttle's mother died 5 years ago and now his dad goes missing. The police and and the newspapers are all over the story to no avail and Darkus (the name never grew on me) eventually is taken to live with his eccentric uncle Max (who has a way cool car).
Darkus makes friends with a beetle the size of a hamster who he names "Baxter". They adventure to “beetle mountain” aka a lovely pile of moldy teacups which a coterie of beetles call home.
But there's more! Lucretia Cutter has a beetle obsession that Darkus and Baxter have to squash while at the same time desperately searching for his father with the help of his best friends forever BFF's Bertolt (who is awesome) and Virginia. Standing in their way are the horrible cousins Humphrey and Pickering.

Beetle Boy would not necessarily be the type of tween book I would normally pick to read. It's more action/adventure than I normally read, and there are elements of fantasy to it as well.
And yet, despite that, it was a fantastic book.
Darkus Cuttle's dad mysteriously disappears one day from his job at a museum. Darkus is sent to live with his Uncle Max, who is eccentric, and a bit of a loner. Next door are two bizarre cousins whose home has been infiltrated by beetles. As Darkus searches for his father he uncovers a variety of clues that all point back to the beetles next door and the evil Lucretia Cutter who was once a fellow researcher with his father. Genetic engineering is part of Lucretia's plan for the beetles as she wants them to have human qualities and reasoning skills which would allow them to greatly impact the earth. As Darkus realizes what he's up against, he must enlist the help of the beetle's next door, as they try to rescue his father from Lucretia's clutches.
Sometimes reading out of my comfort zone is a good thing. This was one of those times. I'm already looking forward to the second installment in this trilogy and think middle grade readers will enjoy this story and it's fast pace a lot.
Beetle Boy is a wonderfully written, quirky little novel that is sure to find fans among bug lovers or any young reader with a fondness for offbeat adventure. Filled with interesting characters and intelligent dialogue, this novel is reminiscent of Lemony Snicket with a hefty dose of Indiana Jones.
Beetle Boy is a fast paced read filled with genuine peril, gross bug moments, and a truly memorable villain. Darkus is an intrepid hero and I loved the gang he assembled. Their willingness to overcome their fears and dive right into dangerous situations will ensure that young readers will remain glued to the page. Who would have ever thought that a beetle could be so charming? Baxter will have everyone wishing for their own personal beetle and looking at some creepy crawlies in a brand new light.
Beetle Boy contains a surprising amount of heart to go with some expertly paced action and is an enthusiastic recommend for grades 4 and up.
If you are into science fiction, Beetle Boy is the book for you! It all starts when Darkus Cuttle’s dad, a recognized scientist, has gone missing from a locked room. Now living with his Uncle Max, an archeologist, he must go to a new dreadful, dreary school King Ethelred Hall School. There, he meets two new friends Virginia and Bertolt. On his way home, he meets another friend a rare rhinoceros beetle which he names Baxter. This beetle is no ordinary beetle though! It’s a super smart, human genetically enhanced beetle species from an old, top secret project called the "Fabre Project." But, trouble comes when the “mad scientist of fashion,” Lucretia Cutter, hears of “special” beetles living in the arguing cousins, Pickering and Humphrey’s, house! She is determined to get those beetles and let no one or nothing get in her way! This Sci-Fi book is full of twists, turns, and brainy beetles!
My favorite character is Baxter. He is always very helpful in times of need and eventually helped lead the rest of the Beetle Army to victory. I wish that I could have a little beetle sitting on my shoulder that could think like a human and help me!
This book is mainly about family, friends, and loyalty. Family; because Darkus was persistent in trying to find his dad. Friends; because Virginia, Bertolt, and Baxter were by his side helping him and working together. And finally, loyalty. Darkus, his friends, his Uncle Max, and Baxter all were by each other’s side and didn’t let each other down.
I recommend this book for boys and girls ages 9-12. I gave the book 5 stars, since it had an interesting plot, complex characters, and made me want to read more! This book is a medium- sized novel. It is 270 pages long and there is also a sequel called, “Revenge of the Beetle Queen!" I can’t wait to read it!
